Mastering the CAGED System

Mastering the CAGED System

New

beginner · Theory
Tommy Gerlach

I often tell my students, the more you learn on the guitar, the more fun the guitar is to play. As a guitarist, being able to pick up the instrument and play freely, anywhere on the neck, is one of the most joyous things in my life. In this course, I want to teach you how to do just that. Make the guitar more fun and help it bring joy to your life. We will dive into understanding the CAGED system, and along the way, dive into basic theory. The goal is to train you to think like a pro by establishing basic theory concepts like, where do scales come from? How do I know what notes are in what chord? How do I target notes in a solo? How do I solo or compose in any key? How do I know what key a song is in? How can I learn a song or lick by ear? Answering all of these questions will allow you to flow freely around the instrument and sound more like an experienced pro.

This class is for beginner and intermediate guitarists who want to become limitless on the fretboard and speak the language of music fluently on the guitar. This course will take guitar players who have a basic knowledge of chords/scales/songs, and transform them into competent musicians who can find all the notes on the guitar, identify riffs by ear, visualize where they are played on the fretboard, and improvise in any key. The goal of this course is to give you complete freedom on the fretboard and turn you into a REAL musician. Diagrams, tabs, and resources will be provided.

Arianna Powell

The guitar contains an infinite number of possibilities when harmonizing a melody ...so where to begin? In this live course, I'll teach you a few of my arrangements and we will analyze the chord choices, colors, lines, reharmonizations and approach to space and time. You'll leave with inspiring material to help you compose your own unique arrangements! I strongly believe the best way to learn is by DOING. New information (chords, lines, theory, etc..) "sticks" when you learn it in the context of actual music. During class, we will occasionally cover exercises/concepts, but will always follow up by playing them in an arrangement.
